The inspiration for this work comes from the long tradition of botanical paintings, drawings and engravings of the pre-photographic era. Botanical illustrations were both of clear scientific value in recording the diversity and characteristics of plants, and also objects of beauty in their own right.

Photographer Graeme Coxon is applying digital photo techniques in continuing this tradition, using native and naturalized Ontario plants, plus some from the vegetable patch.
